The 2020 U.S. presidential election has been meticulously reported by Canadian journalists.
Joe Biden winning the election was the most important news event worldwide. But why is the U.S. election so important to Canadians in particular?
One answer is that American political culture is simply more interesting to Canadians who are consuming and reporting on news events, or at least more so than Canadian politics.
The other answer is that the results of this election will directly affect Canadians, both economically and socially.
David Common, a senior correspondent at CBC’s The National and a host on CBC’s marketplace, says that Canada’s economy heavily depends on the U.S.
“If they get a cold, we get pneumonia,” Common says. “We cannot exist as a country if the United States suddenly decided to actually close the border to goods and services.”

Common says that Biden’s plan to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline, which would run from Alberta to Nebraska, might concern Canadians who are working on its construction.
On the other hand, he also says that Canadians who are more concerned about climate change are going to be happy about this plan.
After Trump won the 2016 election, Canada’s immigration increased by twenty-six per cent.
The question now is if immigration will continue increasing in Canada with Biden as president.
Ultimately, the effects of this election on Canada are yet to come, and will truly be determined after Biden takes office.
