President Donald Trump has blamed his 2020 U.S. election loss on voter fraud, pushing his supporters towards a baseless claim.

The allegation, which has not been backed up by any evidence thus far, disputes the win of democratic candidate Joe Biden. Many say the dispute is a pure denial of the truth.

“He just sort of constructs his own reality and can’t see the difference between that and the actual reality,” said Dr. Matthew Lebo, a politics professor at Western University.

President Trump has questioned the validity of mail-in votes for months, pushing unsubstantiated claims that dead people have voted and that large amounts of mail-in ballots have been found “dumped in a river.”

The push to invalidate mail-in votes is due to the large number of democrats who have turned to the voting method amid COVID-19.

“A lot of states expanded their use of the mail-in ballots because of the COVID[-19] crisis,” said Prof. Melissa Haussman, a politics professor at Carleton University.

In what has been called the “blue shift,” Democrat mail-in votes tabulated days after the election turned states like Mich. and Pa. from Republican to Democrat.

The allegations from Trump and his party have failed to make a difference on the outcome of the election. Legal proceedings by the party are currently focused on the state of Pennsylvania, led by former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Lawyers have departed from the legal team in recent days.
