According to Josh Wingrove, Bloomberg White House reporter, he has been up close and personal with president Trump during his election campaign.

“Bloomberg is in the pool so we will travel with him,” said Wingrove. “Trump is a Tv producer at heart in so many ways and the rallies are these big, loud energetic shows, people love.”

Wingrove also states his job at Bloomberg gives him the opportunity to receive unprecedented access to the president. This is not the case for press working outside of the White House.

“Those of us down here who cover U.S politics for Canadian readers,” said James McCarten, Canadian Press Washington correspondent. “Have the additional challenge of having a hard time getting attention from American politicians and their staff.”

Adapting to the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Canadian journalists who are responsible for US election coverage to make changes and adapt.

“It’s doubly difficult when you’re not actually able to roam the corridors and actually get face time with some of these people,” said McCarten.

The Globe and Mail U.S Correspondent, Tamsin McMahon, explained some challenges she has been facing as a journalist, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You miss something in not being face to face with people and you miss some of the momentum and the energy,” said McMahon.
