In a close-fought and polarizing US election that was watched worldwide, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris sealed their bid for the White House with 306 electoral votes in total.

The results of the election can have long-standing effects outside the US – a new leader can change the country’s international relations and foreign policies almost immediately.

World leaders reacted to the result over social media and in press conferences, and gave insight on where they stand with the US following the election.

“Congratulations to Joe Biden on his election… and to Kamala Harris on her historic achievement,” said UK prime minister Boris Johnson, “The US is our most important ally and I look forward to working closely together on our shared priorities, from climate change to trade and security”

Leaders also made sure to congratulate Vice-President elect Kamala Harris on her achievement of becoming the first woman to hold the position.

“”America will have its first female Vice President in the person of Kamala Harris, and we are proud that she bears Jamaican heritage,” said Jamaican PM Andrew Holness.

“Her ascension to this role is a monumental accomplishment for women all over the world and I salute her.”

Although Biden received an outpouring of support from around the world, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei criticised the election results.

“The situation in the US & what they themselves say about their elections is a spectacle! This is an example of the ugly face of liberal democracy in the US. Regardless of the outcome, one thing is absolutely clear, the definite political, civil, & moral decline of the US regime.”

Mr. Biden’s inauguration is expected to take place on Jan 20.
