Some Americans planned to move to Canada if Trump won the 2020 election.

Donald Trump has been no stranger to public scandal in his four years in office. His policy changes and personal actions drew criticism from a lot of Americans, including Republicans.

Fleeing home

Now Americans are in search of a home with less political turmoil. They have turned to Canada, their northern neighbor, for refuge.

This approach has drawn criticism from some activists who think Americans should remain in their home country to combat injustice.

“I don’t blame them for thinking that way. They’re living in a mean society right now,” said Wayne Petrozzi, a professor at Ryerson University.

Americans cited discrimination, economic troubles and reductions in social problems as reasons why they want to leave their home country.

Can Biden cut the mustard?

President Elect Joe Biden and Vice President Elect Kamala Harris won the 2020 election by a landslide of three states this month.

But not all Americans are satisfied with the results of the election. Molly Sassateli still wants to leave her home in Texas for Canada.

“Biden being president cannot fix the irreparable damage that Trump’s administration did,” said Sassateli.

Friendly northern neighbor

Canada is known globally for robust social programs and strong anti-discrimination legislation.

If Americans follow through with their plans to move to Canada, it would boost Canada’s immigration numbers for 2020 and 2021.

Canada has seen a decrease in immigration numbers compared to previous years due to anxieties and restrictions related to COVID-19.
