Ryerson students are relieved that Donald Trump lost the U.S. presidential election, according to interviews with student group representatives.
Alex Spears, the Ryerson Young Liberals communications director, said he is “tremendously happy that Donald Trump is not the president anymore.”
The vice president of Ryerson Campus Conservatives, Keyaan Nejad, was also happy with the outcome.
“I’m honestly glad that the lunacy of the last four years is over, and political leaders can hopefully return to the statesmen that they once were.”
Kyia Giles, a member of Rye Pride, was enthusiastic about Kamala Harris becoming the first female, first Black, and first South-Asian vice president-elect.
“Being able to see, ‘there’s a woman, someone who looks like me, doing that,’ it definitely opens the door to people.”

Peggy Nash, a former NDP Member of Parliament, said that youth tend to be more engaged in social justice.
“I think that students disproportionately tend to be activists.”
Despite feeling glad that Trump will no longer be president, Spears warned against getting too comfortable with Joe Biden as president. He worried that Americans will feel complacent and stop fighting for change.
“You need to fight just as hard, because… Biden might not be the best guy.”
