A week after election day, the results were finally confirmed. Joe Biden would be the 46th president and Kamala Harris would be the first woman to be elected as vice-president.

Harris is the first black and Asian American woman to be elected as vice-president.

In a video posted to her social media with Biden, she said “We did it, we did it Joe. You’re going to be the next president of the United States!”

Harris began her career at the Alameda Country District Attorney’s Office in Oakland, California where she later became the district attorney and top prosecutor. She was the first woman and first black person to serve as California’s attorney general, top lawyer and law enforcement official.

She has been using her platform to tackle issues and changes like calling on police across the United States. She posted on Twitter calling out the police officers that killed Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American woman, and frequently comments on the dismantlement of police forces across the country.

In Kamala Harris’s autobiography, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, she says “A patriot is not someone who condones the conduct of our country whatever it does. It is someone who fights every day for the ideals of the country, whatever it takes.”

With that, it is clear what Harris has done in an effort to make the country a better place for all citizens and she will continue to do what it takes to represent marginalized communities from inside the White House.
