Mississauga Launches Express Route to Pearson as Travel Surge Approaches

Mayor of Mississauga Bonnie Crombie officially launched MiWay’s Route 100 linking central Mississauga to Pearson Terminals one and three on Friday, November 23.

Route 100 started service on October 29. MiWay riders can travel between 4 a.m. and 7 p.m. to get to and from Pearson International airport, which is Canada’s busiest airport. In 2017, 45.4 million passengers travelled through it, according to Statistics Canada.

“This new route offers a quick, efficient and more affordable way for residents, visitors and thousands of airport employees to get to and from Toronto Pearson International Airport,” said Mayor Crombie, reports the City of Mississauga.

The new bus service was implemented just in time for the holiday travel surge. “The holidays are one of the busiest times of year in the travel industry [and] the U.S. customs and securities line is always one of the longest,” said Flight Attendant for Air Canada Rouge Kira Couvreur.

The first step of planning a vacation is choosing when to travel. Couvreur said its best to book a flight 10 days in advance. Cutting it any closer is taking the chance that it will be sold out, she said. During the holidays, “[employees] and aircraft are being used to their full capacity. This means mechanical difficulties are a lot more frequent because planes have less ground time.” For those who will be taking layover flights, “Give yourself a buffer day [so] if your flight is delayed or cancelled, it will be a lot less stressful. If it isn’t, you’ll have tons of time for wherever your travels are taking you,” she added.

To ensure that travellers are on time for their flights, she recommends arriving an hour and a half before boarding is scheduled. When travelling to the U.S., arrive two and a half hours early. “If you’re only going somewhere for a weekend, or somewhere warmer, just pack a carry on,” she added. “You won’t have to wait in long lineups to check your bags.” Another way to pack lightly is by only bringing what you need and planing your outfits ahead of time.

The fastest way to get through customs is with a Nexus Pass. It is an expedited security clearance for travel between the U.S. and Canada. Holders of the card can skip many of the long lines at the airport because they were prescreened.

Not everyone’s access to Pearson has improved because of Route 100. Those who have not been helped can use Aerofleet Services, Pearson Airport’s licensed cab service.

Couvreur said, “Always be nice to your airline staff [and] flight attendants … especially on Christmas and New Year’s. We are working to bring you to your family by being away from ours.”
