We asked international students, they answered.
Hockey: it may not be our national sport, but we sure do love it. Ask any Canadian and they’ll tell you with pride that one time they watched Darryl Sittler slam 10 points against the Boston Bruins defencemen. But what about those whose blood does not bleed maple? What do they think of our national treasure?
Thu Nga Tran, Vietnam
“I didn’t know anything about hockey, although people say it’s the most dangerous sport in the world because you can die. It’s really interesting. You need to skate and know how to skate, and I don’t. I guess that’s why it’s so dangerous.”
Michaela Curry, Australia
“Field hockey is what my friends play in Australia, but ice hockey is just something that’s very Canadian and only Canadians play. It’s very aggressive and they bump into each other, and it’s actually kind of similar to soccer. That’s not that many goals scored and it often goes into extra time.”
Julia Weekenstroo, The Netherlands
“In my home town, I play field hockey. So that’s a thing something I really like and when people refer to hockey here, I think of field hockey. It always looked very cool, those big guys in those costumes playing hockey. I think now I know more about it, I kind of appreciate it more.”
Grace Goodman, United Kingdom
“I never really knew much of hockey. I knew about it being played and I knew about ice hockey, but I’ve never been interested in sports in general. When I came here, I knew ice hockey was a big thing and I wanted to get into it a bit more and go see a few games. It’s much more physical than I thought it would be. The players get a bit violent. Ice hockey is very interesting. It takes a lot of skill to be able to skate and play at the same time.”
